Interview Questions

What is your greatest strength?

Attention to detail. When working on a project, laser point focus on the little things can go a long way. In ROTC one of our tasks during field training exercises is finding points on a map. We are given the grid coordinates, and then we must find the point on the map that matches those coordinates, then find the angle of the direction that we need to walk to get to that point. By misplacing the point on the map by a mere centimeter a cadet can walk right past the point and if the angle is also off by just a degree or two, then a cadet can walk right past their point and never even see it. The same concept applies to the workforce. By putting in the time and attention to focus on the little things, projects can be done more efficiently and more quickly.

When have you used problem-solving and team skills to resolve an issue?

Again in ROTC, my squad was participating in a leadership development course. We had to cross a "minefield" using only two boards. About halfway through the simulation, we found ourselves with 4 of our squad members standing on a board and with no way to get across. We were stuck. We stood there for a couple minutes trying to figure out what to do. Then, I had an idea. By assessing our resources and evaluating what their capabilities were, I was able to think of a creative way to fix our problem. Basically, some basic engineering principles and our own bodies we were able to create a bridge to cross the mine field. Creativity and good use of resources are what got us past that difficult predicament.

What is the most important factor in choosing a company to work for?

The company I choose to work for must have a valuable mission statement and a positive company climate. A valuable mission statement to me represents strong ethical values, a good work ethic, and supportive and service style leadership. By living the mission statement and striving for a better product or service I can be assured that the company I work for cares about what they do and takes great pride in being the best. A positive company climate ensures that going to work every day doesn't become a trail of tears to the office. The character of the executives can influence the managers and this can boost or deteriorate the mood of the company. I should enjoy working with co-workers and managers. I want to look forward to being challenged and not dread my tasks because I haven't been trained. Companies such as Google and Zappos exemplify what I believe to be the ideal workplace. A place where real people can go to enjoy each others company and be productive at the same time. A 15-minute break with free soda will not help an employee get through a day of problems and tasks.
